The traffic unit of the Garden City Police Department is back up and running as of today. Two years ago, the traffic unit was disassembled so it could be reevaluated and reorganized. Now officers have been reassigned and their duty is to keep the streets safe from speeders and people driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
Chief David Lyons says this is much different from the old traffic unit, which gave Garden City a reputation for being a speed trap.
"I'm concerned about quality of tickets not quantity," he said. "I don't have a quota system, or a performance standard, but I want tickets to be quality tickets."
The new unit consists of two officers right now. By the end of the month, a third officer will be added.
