HINESVILLE, GA (WTOC) -

The Hinesville Police Department are investigating a home invasion that lead to two men being shot in Hinesville late Saturday night.

It happened in the Colonial Parks Condos on Pineland Ave just before midnight. Police say the homeowner was upstairs when he and his wife heard someone entering their home through a door in the kitchen area.

The homeowner went downstairs confronted the intruder and both men began shooting. It is not known if the homeowner had a weapon with him or retrieved it downstairs.

According to Major Thomas Cribbs, Chief of Detectives for the Hinesville Police Department, a gunfight broke out between the two men with bullets going through the walls into an adjoining apartment next door. A bullet hole was also found at the entrance to the residence.

The homeowner, a Ft. Stewart soldier, was shot and flown by helicopter to Memorial Health in Savannah.

Officials say the intruder left the residence through the back door where police, using a canine, followed a blood trail to an apartment in the complex.  The man was not found at that apartment.

Later that night, police say a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds showed up at Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville stating he had been shot by someone while walking down the street earlier in that evening.

The condition of the Ft. Stewart soldier in unknown at this time.
