A shooting in Hinesville was too close to home for some

Posted: Updated:

Some who live at Colonial Parks Condos in Hinesville are afraid to go into their own homes, after a Saturday night shooting.

According to police, two men were shot, one of them a Ft. Stewart soldier, trying to protect his home.

Police say a man broke into the soldiers apartment late Saturday. The soldier and his wife were in bed when they heard noise downstairs. He went to investigate and that's when the two started shooting at each other, according to police.

One of the bullets was shot into the kitchen of the apartment next door, no one in that apartment was hurt, but they say they could have easily been hit if they'd been in the kitchen.

Mariano Escalante and his roommate are used to getting shot at, they're in the army and they've both served in Iraq. But Escalante said he felt safer in Iraq than he does in his own home, in America.

"You go to Afghanistan, you go to Iraq you know what you need to look out for, so in a sense it makes it easier being overseas," he said. "You know every morning that you're going to have to stay away from this or that, but being here you have no idea what's going to happen."

Even though police say this is an isolated incident, Escalante's roommate, Katlyn Hosmer, said she's afraid someone will try to break into their apartment now.

"It does scare me, cause now I just don't know what will happen to me during the day when I'm here by myself," said Hosmer.

The suspect is in the hospital, and he has been charged with aggravated assault, burglary and possession of marijuana. He will be taken to jail once he is in better health.

The victim was flown to Memorial Hospital in Savannah. He is in critical condition.

Police aren't releasing the names of the victim or the suspect at this time.
