Man sentenced for sexual exploitation of a minor

A Savannah man was sentenced last week to 20 years in prison in federal court for sexual exploitation of a minor.

Robert A. Flaesch, 46, was arrested by federal agents in Detroit while returning from a trip in the Philippines. He was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release and to register as a sex offender after serving his prison term.

Flaesch had been in a relationship from 1998 to 2003 with a woman and lived with her and her child in different areas within the U.S. Southern District of Georgia, including Tybee Island and Pooler.

Flaesch hid a video camera within the home and filmed the child undressing and also went into the room while the child was sleeping and filmed himself engaging in sexual conduct with the child, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

In 2011, Garden City police received videos recorded by Flaesch. The FBI confirmed the identity of the child who is now an adult, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

"This defendant admitted to knowingly using a child to engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of producing child pornography. The U.S. Attorney's Office aggressively prosecutes individuals, like this defendant, who are involved in the sexual exploitation of children.  FLAESCH'S prosecution sends a message that we will do all in our power to protect our children from such predatory acts," said U.S. Attorney Edward J. Tarver in a statement.
