Children's summer food program underway

The summer food program at America's Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia kicked off in June.

It's aimed at making sure at-risk children don't go hungry even when school is out for the summer.

Second Harvest will be provided hot, balanced meals for more than 5,000 children in Appling, Bulloch, Chatham, Effingham, Evans, Tattnall and Wayne counties.

In Appling County 70 percent of children are at-risk for hunger. In Bulloch County, 62 percent of children are at-risk, in Chatham County, 64 percent of children are at-risk, 43 percent are at risk in Effingham County, 84 percent are at-risk in Evans County, 75 percent are at-risk in Tattnall and 67 percent are at-risk in Wayne County.
