Chatham County residents could be faced with another election soon. Judge Leroy Burke of Recorder's Court has accepted a job with the Juvenile Court. This vacancy gives the City of Savannah and the county two options. They can either appoint a new judge or let the people decide in a special election.
City council members say this is a serious decision, since Recorder's Court is considered the "people's court" and it's very important to have the right person take over.
"It's important because the Recorder's Court deals with everyday city and county issues, the police issues, city ordinance issues," said council member Tony Thomas. "The caseload they have is very large and filling this position is crucial to the county."
The city will be sending the county some suggestions and a decision should be made in the very near future.
