CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

The Chatham County Health Dept. recommends residents take steps to prevent mosquito bites to lower the risk of getting West Nile Virus.

Mosquitoes carry the virus. The health department is warning residents to prepare their property so it doesn't attract mosquitoes.

The health department offers these prevention tips:

  • Drain standing water
  • Avoid being outside at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active
  • Dress in long sleeves and pants to defend against mosquitoes
  • Defend against mosquitoes by wearing DEET or another insect repellant
  • Double check doors and windows should be in good condition
  • Remove standing water from containers around your property or make the containers so they no longer hold water
  • Store children's pools empty and on their sides so they don't collect water
  • Change water frequently in pet dishes
  • Change bird bath water at least twice a week
  • Avoid using saucers under outdoor potted plants

The health department recommends that neighborhoods organize a summer clean-up effort to get rid of garbage from public spaces to cut down on attracting mosquitoes.
