Savannah-Chatham Police Seek Suspect in Two Rapes

Savannah-Chatham police are looking for a rapist who attacked twice this week. Both happened on the Southside, one early Tuesday morning at Magnolia Apartments on Montgomery Cross Road, and the other early yesterday at Edgewater Trace Apartments on Abercorn Street.

Both victims say they were forced to drive to a secluded spot where they were raped.

"Believe me, I have my son watching me as I go in and come out," said Edgewater resident Roseannie Arkwright. She says she may have been approached by the man police are looking for, but she didn't put two and two together until she heard about the rapist last night.

"About two weeks ago, I went to the Dumpster to take out my trash, and there was someone hiding behind the Dumpster that actually said, 'Come over here,' and I took off and came back to my apartment," she said.

Police say the best thing women can do is be aware of there surroundings. The parking lot may not look very dangerous during the day, but at night it's a different story. Bushes and the Dumpster are a great place for a suspect to hide.

Police say if you're being approached by someone you don't know, run, drive away or make some noise. Arkwright says she's not going to take any chances. "Everybody just needs to watch themselves and each other."

Police say the victims both gave similar descriptions on what the suspect looked like: a black male in his mid to late 20s, between 5'8" and 6'2" tall, weighing between 185 and 200 pounds. He's dark skinned and clean shaven. Police believe the suspect may live in the area in or near where he approached the victims.
