STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

Georgia Southern University, home to the Eagle Battalion and part of the Reserve Officer Training Corps since 1980, marked the 238th birthday of the U.S. army.

On Friday, they participated in the traditional cake cutting with a sabre. The cake was a camouflage tank.

These young people are making a serious commitment to the nation. For one college sophomore cadet, it's a family tradition. Both her mother and father served in the military.

WTOC General Manager Bill Cathcart was the featured speaker. He is also a civilian aide to the secretary of the army.
