Broken AC closes SCMPD Central Precinct building

Posted: Updated:

The building that houses the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department Central Precinct at 1512 Bull Street has been shut down due to air conditioner problems.

Capt. DeVonn Adams, commander of the precinct, sent his clerical staff home and detectives to different precincts Friday after temperatures reached the mid-90s in the building

Police have been working out of the building for decades, but it is owned by Bull Street Baptist Church. They are working to correct the problem but say it could take two weeks to get the air conditioner fixed.

This is just the latest problem in an area that for years was the highest-crime precinct.

"We had some air quality issues, some plumbing issues and some roof leak issues," said Adams..

Police had to have roll call in the parking lot Friday.

On Monday, a sub-station recently opened in McAlpin Square shopping center will be pressed into expanded services and detectives and office staff will work from that office or different precincts.

Adams says beat officers are mostly in their cars and usually only come to the precinct for bathroom breaks.

"So right now what you will see is more officers probably using the restroom in stores and businesses and things," said Adams.

Right now, Adams says it is just not safe to work inside.

"Basically, most of our work is done from vehicles, so service to the precinct will not be affected," Adams said in a press release. "It will be an inconvenience to officers and office staff but we are working to minimize the effect on the public. But we could not jeopardize the health of the employees by remaining in the building."

Telephone calls to the precinct will be redirected to the office of Patrol North Maj. James Barnwell. The public is encouraged to call Emergency 911 with any immediate concerns.
