BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

Beaufort celebrated the 236th birthday of the American flag Friday afternoon at Waterfront Park.

The Knights of Columbus Assembly 1447 and Council 5026 and the city of Beaufort put the ceremony on, which brought in a crowd of nearly 50 people.

The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts were also there to help out. Beaufort High School Women's Choir sang the Star Spangled Banner and St. Peter's Catholic Church Choir sang a selection of patriotic songs.

This is a longtime tradition for Beaufort, a city that has a huge military presence.

"The American flag is very important especially in Beaufort since we're a military town ," said Meg Lacomp, Beaufort resident. "It's good for us to support our flag, which represents our country."

"It's how we fought for to have our freedom," said Ellie Lacomp, Beaufort resident.

Dignitaries in attendance included Rep. Shannon Erickson, Mayor Billy Keyserling, Rev. Fr. Paul MacNeil, Beaufort County School Board Chairman Bill Evans, USMC Col. Michael Bowersox, and BCSO Maj. Allen Horton.
