Sand Gnats shave their heads to battle children's cancer

A few members of the Savannah Sand Gnats lost their hair for a good cause Saturday.

They were part of a head shaving event this afternoon at Grayson Stadium. The Sand Gnats partnered with the Versus Cancer Foundation, which raises money to support children's cancer research.

Proceeds will benefit the Vs. Cancer Foundation and the Backus Children's hospital at Memorial University Medical Center.

"The Vs. Cancer Foundation called me about a month ago, he wanted to do a head shaving event to raise awareness for childhood cancer at the same time, Evan's mother, a young boy who passed away from leukemia recently, she reached out to me, he was an avid Sand Gnats fan and she wanted to do something special for him." said Taryn Duncan, Sand Gnats Community Affairs Manager.

This is the first time organizers have held such an event, but they say they hope to have more in the future.
