SFES: Arson not suspected in fire

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

No suspicious activity is suspected in a fire that destroyed a woodworking building Thursday in west Savannah, according to Savannah Fire & Emergency Services.

The fire at Savannah Architectural Supply at 1880 W. Gwinnett St. was reported just after 5 p.m. Thursday. Savannah Fire & Emergency Services investigators did not find any evidence of arson in the fire at the West Gwinnett Street building.

The fire appears to have started near a pickup truck that was parked inside the back of the structure, and investigators have not been able to rule it out as a possible cause of the fire, according to SFES investigators.

The two-alarm blaze took several dozen firefighters more than two hours to bring under control, according to SFES. The second alarm was sounded after flames had engulfed the entire structure and more resources were needed to fight the blaze, according SFES.

The flames were attacked from all sides of the building and from above. About an hour and a half into the firefighters' operation, the roof collapsed. It took firefighters about another 30 minutes to bring the incident under control and extinguish the flames. The fire was fueled by the abundance of material used in woodworking.

No one was inside at the time of the fire and no one was injured.

SFES investigators continue to look for more evidence into the fire's cause.
