CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

An inmate at the Chatham County Detention Center is charged with attacking an officer on June 16.

Derek Rogers attacked Officer Meeks, the officer assigned to watch over him, just before 11 p.m. June 16, according to the Chatham County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities say Meeks was working in one of the housing units when Rogers began telling him the phones were not working. Meeks tried to figure out the situation by asking the inmate what was going on. Agitation then turned into aggression when Rogers crossed over on to the platform that serves as Meeks' work station and physically assaulted him. Meeks gave Rogers several directives to stand down but he refused. Meeks was immediately assisted by other nearby officers.

Meeks was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Rogers has been charged with felony obstruction of an officer with harm/injury. Roger's original charges from Port Wentworth were all for misdemeanors.
