3 suspects in custody after vehicle theft

Three suspects are being questioned by Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police robbery detectives after the stolen car they were in collided with two police cars Wednesday afternoon.

The three males were arrested after they collided with a Georgia State Patrol car that was attempting to block their path on I-516 and sideswiped a Metro police car. All three suspects were taken into custody at the scene.

Undercover officers with the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team spotted the car traveling on 37th St. and alerted a Metro officer who attempted a traffic stop just before 1 p.m. The car sped away and the Metro officer discontinued the pursuit. A state trooper in the area interceded. The state trooper attempted to corral the Altima on the a bridge on I-516 but it struck his car and then sideswiped the Metro car. Both police cars were slightly damaged. The Altima received heavier damage and had to be towed away.

According to police, the 2013 Nissan Altima the suspects were driving was taken in the robbery of a 28-year-old man in front of his apartment on West Oglethorpe Ave. Tuesday night. The owner told police that he was sitting in the car around 11 p.m. when a man placed a box cutter to his face, ordered him to get out of the vehicle and then drove away in it.

Detectives are now trying to determine if anyone in the car was involved in the carjacking or other offenses. Police say names will not be released unless charges are filed. Georgia State Patrol in investigating the collision. Any charges with be filed by SCMPD.
