Man fatally struck by SCHP patrol car

SEABROOK, SC (WTOC) -

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal traffic collision involving an South Carolina Highway Patrol car and a pedestrian that occurred early Wednesday morning on SC Hwy 21.

Just before 5 a.m. Wednesday deputies responded to the area of Hwy 21 (Trask Pkwy) and Martin Lane on a report from a SCHP trooper about a collision between his patrol car and a pedestrian. 

EMS personnel pronounced the 68-year-old Hispanic male dead at the scene. He appeared to have been walking southbound on the roadway at the time he was hit by the Ford Crown Victoria, according to BCSO. The victim's identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The 41-year-old trooper, who was not injured, was on-duty and driving a marked car, according to the BCSO.

Hwy 21 between Seabrook Center Road and Martin Lane were closed to traffic during the investigation and reopened at 7:30 a.m. Traffic was rerouted onto Seabrook Center Road.
