BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

A man who was walking on US 21 in Beaufort on Wednesday morning when he was fatally struck by a South Carolina Highway Patrol car has been identified.

The Beaufort County coroner said the man killed was 67-year-old Juan Vargas.

Just before 5 a.m. Wednesday deputies responded to the area of US 21 and Martin Lane on a report from a SCHP trooper about a collision between his patrol car and a pedestrian.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating the crash.

Sgt. Robin McIntosh, of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office said Vargas was wearing dark clothing.

She said that even though the victim was pronounced dead at the scene,  the trooper did what he could after the crash.

"The trooper did get out and try to provide life saving measures however the victim was already deceased," she said.
