PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Phoenix area grandmother chased away a would-be kidnapper attempting to abduct her 3-year-old grandchild, police said.

A suspect was later arrested.

Officers said the woman had been watching two of her grandchildren, ages 1 and 3, in the front yard. At some point, she was on the phone, looked out and saw a man trying to snatch the 3-year-old, police said.

She confronted the suspect, who fled on foot in the area of 17th and Oak.

Police are trying to determine if the suspect knew the family.
