Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, GA (WTOC) -

Authorities are investigating after a pedestrian was fatally struck by a train Friday night in Springfield.

According to Effingham County Sheriff's Office, the incident happened on Springfield Egypt Road at Bethel Road.

Police say a man was walking along the tracks when a Norfolk Southern train hit and killed him. Police found identification but they are not releasing his name until the next of kin is notified. Police say there are no signs of foul play at this time.

"It was about 8 p.m. on Friday night when the train was traveling probably northbound on the railroad tracks down here near Bethel Road. According to the conductor, he did see an adult black male on the railroad tracks. He tried to do his best to stop but it was too late unfortunately. The adult male was hit by the train and killed. Right now, we are out here processing the scene. We have sheriff's investigators out here, crime scene unit, and also members from the railroad. We are just trying to determine exactly what led up to this and why this happened," said David Ehsanipoor, Effingham County Sheriff's Office.

Motorists should avoid the area.
