EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

The Effingham Co. Sheriff's Office has identified a man who was hit and killed by a train Friday night as Marcus Jackson, 21, of Clyo.

At about 8 p.m., ECSO responded to the intersection of Springfield Egypt and Bethel roads on a report of a train crash involving a pedestrian.

"Initial reports indicate Jackson was walking on the train tracks alone when he was hit by the train," said Sheriff's spokesman David Ehsanipoor in a statement. "The Southern Norfolk engineer attempted to alert the pedestrian and stop the train prior to striking him but it was too late."

There are no signs of foul play, according to the ECSO. An autopsy will be conducted Monday morning at the GBI Crime Lab in Savannah.

ECSO's Criminal Investigations Division and Norfolk Southern continue to investigate.
