Phone scheme uses hostage ploy

CHARLESTON, SC (WTOC) -

Charleston police say a woman got a call from an unknown man - claiming her husband had been in a terrible wreck - and was being held hostage at gunpoint.

The caller told her not call police, but to go to a nearby Food Lion and withdraw $500 from an ATM in order to save her husband. After she reached her husband, he told her he was fine.

Charleston police said Macon's police department had a report of a similar incident. Beaufort police said they have not received any reports of such incidents there.
