Ga. Municipal Association holds 80th annual convention

City officials from across the state are in Savannah for the 80th annual Georgia Municipal Association Convention. Congressman Jack Kingston provided an update on policy development and spoke specifically about the collection of online sales tax with regards to the Marketplace Fairness Act.

"It's passed the Senate, but it does not have a lot of support in the House," said Kingston. "Tax issues in general are wrapped up into a bigger issues in general into a question of what can we do to simplify the tax code. Either move them to a fair tax or a flat tax. So I do not think this legislation is going to move quickly."

Several municipal leaders from southeast Georgia were also present, including Tybee Island mayor pro tem Wanda Doyle. She says Tybee Island can look forward to a new public safety facility in the near future.

"If you could see our public safety building as it is right now. It's over crowded. It's old. It's about to fall down. We feel like it will be a plus for us. It's actually in the Fort Scriven area," says Doyle

Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson was sworn in as the third vice president of the Georgia Municipal Association during the convention.
