Effingham Co. hires attorney to investigate recourse against King America

Posted: Updated:
EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Effingham County has hired an attorney to look into the King America Finishing fish kill. So far, no suits have been filed and there is not a timetable for that to happen.

Effingham County commissioners voted Tuesday to hire Savannah-based attorney Oliver Maner to see if there is a way the county can get damages from King America after the fish kill back in 2011 in the Ogeechee River.

According to officials, the law firm will only be paid if a settlement is reached.

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division says the fish were killed by a bacterial infection. They also say the plant was releasing chemicals without a permit.

The fish kill happened right around a discharge pipe King America had in the Ogeechee River.
