ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Governor Nathan Deal was on hand to make remarks at the Southwest Georgia Family Medicine Residency ceremony Wednesday afternoon at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

Governor Deal told the new residents that he encourages them to stay in Georgia to practice medicine.

He said this is a very under-served region of the state medically, and that in terms of economic development, we will not see any million dollar companies wanting to come to town, unless they are certain of adequate high-quality medical care.

"I kind of grew up here part of my life, because my grandmother suffered from breast cancer. And she would always have treatments here when they first built the cancer center. So coming back at this moment is so surreal, because I said at one point that I'm going to work here one day," said  Dr. Emantavius Williams, who is in Family Medicine Residency.

Deal said that educational programs such as the Phoebe Residency are vital to training future doctors.

WALB's Jim Wallace is at the event, and he will have more information this afternoon on TV, and here on WALB.com.
