Villa Rica jewelry store owner shot, killed during robbery

Posted: Updated:

A Villa Rica jewelry store owner was shot and killed during a robbery Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting happened around 1 p.m. at The Mobley Company Jewelers Inc., which is located in a strip mall on Carrollton Villa Rica Highway.

"At least four males entered the business. It appears it was a robbery where they smashed some of the jewelry cases," said Villa Rica Police Capt. Keith Shaddix. "We don't know what happened after that. We are still looking to see what went wrong with the robbery - what resulted in the shooting."

Police have not identified the victim, but the family and friends said Mitch Mobley was shot and killed when four or five men robbed the store.

"He was just wonderful, incredible and giving - just a great family man, great husband and great dad," said Christine Cassel.

Cassel said she bought all her jewelry from Mobley.

"It's just agreat jewelry story, family owned. His sons worked for him, his wife and his family. He supports the community. It's a huge loss for us," said Cassel.

Police said one of the men is in custody.

The website for the jewelry store said the victim founded The Mobley Company Jewelers Inc. in 1990 along with his wife Tammy J. Mobley.
