Nearly 2,000 YMCA gymnasts compete in Savannah

Posted: Updated:

Close to 2,000 gymnasts and their families are in Savannah this week for the YMCA National Championships. This is the largest the event has ever been, and it's having an impact on the local economy.

Visit Savannah said that over the course of the four- to five-day event, gymnasts have booked about 6,000 hotel rooms. When they are not competing, these families are putting Savannah on the map, and money into the local economy.

"When they're not competing, which you're only competing for a couple hours each day, the rest of the time, they're doing the trolley tours. They're doing ghost tours. They're getting ice cream. They're buying pralines. They're doing all of the tourist stuff they could possibly do while they're here," said Ben Wilder, the sport council director for Visit Savannah.

It has been about 10 years since Savannah has hosted the YMCA national gymnastics championship. Visit Savannah says the event has nearly doubled in size with close to two thousand gymnasts participating this year and 24 states represented.

Gymnasts like Muhamad Eltaeb and his mother May Bashari who are from out of town say they have been taking advantage of being here. "We're going to the beach. We took the ferry. It was very nice. We're still going to be here until Sunday. We can't wait to spend more time and have fun," said Bashari.

If you would like to watch the gymnastics, you can purchas tickets at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center. Tickets for adults at $15 and tickets for children at $10. The competition will last through Saturday.
