Body found in Midway front yard identified

MIDWAY, GA (WTOC) -

The Liberty County coroner has identified the body of a man found in a front yard overnight in Midway.

Coroner Reginald Pierce Sr. told WTOC that the body is that of 46-year-old Ernie Walthour Sr.

Authorities have launched a homicide investigation. Police were called out to Lewis Frasier Road between E Oglethorpe Hwy and Ernie Drive shortly before 1 a.m. Monday on several reports of a body found.

Deputies found Walthour's body in the front yard of a home on Lewis Frasier Road.

Some who worked with Walthour said he was a great friend.

"We went to high school together. We grew up together. He was a great friend. He would help me out and I would help him out - a big family you know?" said friend Gene Salter.

Walthour's body has been taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy. Preliminary results are expected to be released Monday afternoon or Tuesday.

Walthour was named a WTOC Hometown Hero in 2006.

Officials had to close Lewis Frasier Road. for a while as they searched for clues and processed the scene. The road has since reopened.
