The Liberty County coroner has identified the body of a man found in a front yard overnight in Midway. 

Coroner Reginald Pierce Sr. told WTOC that the body is that of 46-year-old Ernie Walthour Sr. 

Authorities have launched a homicide investigation. Police were called out to Lewis Frasier Road between E Oglethorpe Hwy and Ernie Drive shortly before 1 a.m. Monday on several reports of a body found. 

Deputies found Walthour's body in the front yard of a home on Lewis Frasier Road. 

Ernie Walthour was best known for his work with St. James Church. He coached AAU basketball was an organizer of an annual event called the Summer Slam.

Some who worked with Walthour said he was a great friend.

"We went to high school together. We grew up together. He was a great friend. He would help me out and I would help him out - a big family you know?" said friend Gene Salter. 

"People would come from Florida all the way to New York. He told me just the other day that this would be the biggest event they have had in a long time," he said. 

Walthour's body has been taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy. Preliminary results are expected to be released Monday afternoon or Tuesday. 

Walthour was named a WTOC Hometown Hero in 2006. 

Officials had to close Lewis Frasier Road. For a while as they searched for clues and processed the scene. The road has since reopened.
