Hearing resumes in death of pregnant Ga. soldier

FORT STEWART, Ga. (AP) - A Georgia-based soldier charged with murder in his pregnant wife's death is scheduled to return to a military courtroom for a second day of testimony that will determine whether he should face trial by a court-martial.

Army prosecutors say 22-year-old Pvt. Isaac Aguigui (AH-gee-gee) got more than $500,000 in life insurance and benefits after his wife, Sgt. Deirdre Aguigui, died in July 2011. Civilian prosecutors say he used the money to fund an anti-government militia group.

A military investigator testified Monday that initial autopsy results were inconclusive, but a civilian medical examiner who took a second look concluded the woman was choked or smothered.

Aguigui's defense attorneys say the death "remains a mystery." It was unknown if they would call any defense witnesses as the hearing continues Tuesday.
