STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

A place that hosts its share of parties had a celebration of its own. Members of the Statesboro-Bulloch County Recreation Department marked the 20th anniversary of Mill Creek Regional Park's opening on April 3, 1993.

City and county leaders - past and present - marked the occassion with birthday cake and photos. Executive Director Mike Rollins remembered selling the community on the local option sales tax that would help fund the complex of baseball, softball and soccer fields, as well as picnic areas and walking trails.

"We intended it primarily for families in our community," he recalled. "But it has become a destination for people from across our area and beyond."

Rollins estimated the number of visitors now approaches 250,000 annually. The baseball and softball fields play host to multiple tournaments each summer that bring teams from across the Southeast in addition to recreation league play. Likewise, the addition of Splash in The Boro water park brings people, and tourism dollars, to the community. A new tennis complex also hosts regional high school tournaments as well as individual play.

"For people outside this community, that number might be hard to believe," Rollins added. "But if you live here and you see how busy this place is during the week and every weekend, you know how popular it is."

Community leaders showed their appreciation for Rollins' leadership by naming the main entrance in his honor.
