Rain soaks July 4th in Statesboro

STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

Rains dampened some of the usual fun at one of the region's largest July 4th parties. Crowds were smaller at Statesboro's Mill Creek Park from showers earlier in the evening. Water damage delayed the fireworks show. But the thousands who stuck around got a complete show.

The park's Firecracker Festival features live music and inflatable games for children, plus old fashioned favorites like a greased pole climb and frog jumping contest. Ten hungry grownups competed to see who could finish their five-foot Subway sandwich platter first. Richardo Ramirez won the $500 prize and platter-shaped plaque.

Two downpours caused delays in some events while others were shifted to other locations because of rainfall.

"We know people are coming no matter what, so we just have to wade through it so to speak," explained Mike Rollins, executive director of the Statesboro-Bulloch County Recreation Department.

Wednesday marked the 20th anniversary of Mill Creek Park's opening, hosting the Firecracker Festival as its first event. Since then, the holiday party has grown to attract 12,000 to 15,000 visitors and draw people from across the region.
