Fort Stewart hosts Salute to America event

Posted: Updated:

One by one, cannons ignited for every state in the nation. Crowds of people gathered at Fort Stewart Thursday for the Salute to America celebration. The ceremony takes place every year on the Fourth of July, a holiday that means a little more to those fighting for our freedom.

"It is a good feeling knowing you are doing something good protecting everyone and doing something to the community to help out," said Dominique Petty.

Many are thankful the event was still able to happen.

"I think it is really cool and awesome that we are still able to do this with all the struggles that have been going on with the budget and all that stuff," said Arianna Buckmaster.

Since the sequester, some military bases had to cut their Fourth of July festivities, including fireworks. According to Fort Stewart officials, the Morale Welfare and Recreation Program had already funded the fireworks before sequestration kicked in. They say they did not bring in outside entertainment and vendors this year. It was a much smaller event, but attendees did not seem to care.

Fort Stewart troops returned home this week and more are expected back this month, which makes the holiday even more special.

"It's good to know that everyone is coming home and that they actually made it back for the Fourth to be able to just come back and enjoy time with their families," said Petty.
