Police to beef up patrols during holiday weekend

With the busy holiday weekend, law enforcement will be out in full force patrolling the streets and keeping drivers safe.

The HEAT is on in Valdosta, that is the Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic team. HEAT Officer Bucky Griffin says they'll be beefing up patrols this weekend, anticipating busy roads and traffic violators.

"There's a lot of people on the roadways and its our responsibility to go out and try to ensure their safety as much as we can," said Griffin.

Officers will be hiding in locations you don't know about, looking for those breaking the law.

"This is a very good location for observing drivers, making sure they're wearing their seat belts, making sure they don't have tint violations or such things," said Griffin.

And it's getting pulled over for window tint that could get you in the most trouble.

"Sometimes you find DUI's, sometimes you find people who have a warrant for their arrest," said Griffin.

And make sure to pay attention to road signs, you could end up like this guy.

"Local traffic only, trucks must detour. There are signs and arrows for you. 'I apologize, yes sir.'"

For all of those drivers with road rage stuck in traffic this weekend, try and keep your cool.

"There's more of a tendency for people to get aggravated when they're driving, so it causes them to drive a little more erratically," said Griffin.

And Valdosta Police will have double the number of officers out working this weekend to find those drivers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ranks the 4th of July holiday, as the deadliest holiday for alcohol related fatalities.
