A 45-year-old Lexington County man was arrested after the Sheriff's Department said he ran over and killed his 49-year-old girlfriend Thursday afternoon while he was under the influence.

The Lexington County Sheriff's Department arrested Charlie Austin Roof and charged him with felony driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs that results in a death.

Sheriff James Metts says investigators are still looking into the circumstances surrounding the bizarre turn of events.

Metts says Roof was found standing over the body of Mary Jane Tucker on Decie Road near Leesville. Deputies said Roof smelled of alcohol when they approached him.

Roof and Tucker were inside the woman's Dodge Durango when an argument broke out between the two down the road from her families home where they had a small get together on the Fourth of July, investigators believe.

However, Metts says deputies are unsure how Tucker ended up outside the car before she was ran over.

Neighbor Amber Derrick saw parts of the argument.

"I was standing right there on the porch and I saw them up there and I saw her car door open and her coming out of the car door," said Derrick.

Metts said Roof performed poorly on a field sobriety test and refused to take a breathalyzer test at the Detention Center.

The Lexington County Coroner's Office says his reports show Tucker died from traumatic injuries to the upper body from being run over.

"She had two younger daughters and two grandchildren and she just didn't deserve it," said Derrick. "He deserves to be where he's at."

Roof's bond hearing was Friday morning and his bond was set at $200,000.

The case is still under investigation.
