BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

More than 500 children are participating in Beaufort County Parks and Leisure Services camps this summer at eight different recreation centers north and south of the Broad.

Children ages 6-12 stated camp June 11 and have already taken field trips to Monkey Joes in Savannah, Northbridge Cinemas, Splash in the Boro and Station 300. Officials say more field trips are planned to the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, the Charleston Aquarium and Bee City.

On the days the children are not traveling around the Lowcountry and Coastal Empire, they make arts and crafts, play word games indoors, and stay active by playing soccer basketball and kickball.

"These camps are important because they continue to stimulate learning and growth, which is so important in the developmental process over the summer months when school is not in session.  The best part about it is they get to do this in a fun environment, whether it's at one of our centers or on the road on a field trip", said PALS Director Scott Marshall in a press release.
