LADY'S ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

A local hero saved a life in a different way on the Beaufort River Sunday.

Scott Harris, an off duty firefighter with the Lady's Island St. Helena Fire District, was boating near Woods Memorial Bridge when his wife Stephanie saw a man fall from the bridge.

Scott dove out of the boat as his wife took the wheel. With a few shallow dives he was able to feel the man underwater and pull him to the surface.

The man was very distressed because he could not swim, so the Harris' could not get him to get in their boat. Emergency responders arrived in another boat that took him to land.

More emergency crews were at the dock when they arrived.

The patient was transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
