A vigil is planned for this evening at Brooks County High School in memory of three football players killed Tuesday.
Jicarre Watkins, Shawn Waters and Johnie Parker died when their SUV slammed into a tree around 9:30AM on North Webster Street in Quitman, as they were returning from an early morning football practice.
Another teammate, De'Vron Whitfield, was critically injured and airlifted from the scene to Shands Hospital in Gainesville.
Whitfield's sister says her brother is in critical condition, and is breathing on his own.
GSP troopers say Whitfield was ejected from the car and was found alive in the grass. Troopers say the driver lost control of the car and crashed into a tree. They say some of the teens may not have been wearing seat belts and speeding could have been a factor.
"The driver lost control of the vehicle going across the roadway, overturned and actually struck a tree. There were three victims that were trapped in the vehicle that had to be extricated," said GSP Trooper Sgt. Carl Taylor.
Troopers say it'll take about a week to determine exactly why the car crashed, and they aren't sure yet who was driving the car.
The vigil will be held in the Brooks County High School Cafeteria.
