Hargray offers new program to help veterans

BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) -

Military veterans David Kleiman and Tom Deal are reporting for duty. They're part of a new employment program at Hargray Communications called Heroes at Hargray that offers hands-on vocational training to military vets.

"It's good to use the skills that I already have added to the training that I'm already getting here at Hargray," said Kleiman.

The program gives veterans an opportunity to learn a skill that could open many new doors for them. And Kleiman says it offers more structure and discipline than other civilian jobs.

"It's almost militaristic as far as their efficiency and how things go," he said.

"I believe that every veteran has a unique set of skills to bring to any company but it's hard to translate those skills onto just a piece of paper or just a resume," said Marine Corps Sgt. Tom Deal.

"I remember my first day," said Chris McCorkendale, Hargray Vice President of Engineering and Operations.

An Army veteran himself, he knows firsthand how difficult the transition can be. McCorkendale says the leadership and accountability skills many vets have are an asset.

"And we really think that that's important here that we grab hold of these individuals, make them part of our team set clear expectations for them and give them every opportunity to be successful in the environment that they work," he said.

Hargray Communications hopes this will be a test model program for other businesses in the Lowcountry to implement.
