Family Finance: How to save on vacation with apps

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

From flights to gas to food, travel expenses can add up quickly. Thanks to modern technology, you can save on your summer vacation from the palm of your hand.

If you plan on getting away this summer and want a break from your smart phones, think twice before ditching your mobile device if you want to travel on a budget.

"There's definitely an app for that. Especially when you're trying to save a little time and money when you're out and about on vacation this year," Chris Benatti of Verizon Wireless said.

One of the best apps to use when taking a roadtrip is GasBuddy.

"It allows the consumer to go into their device and identify where the cheapest gas is. If they're not familiar with the area they can simply put in the area and it's based of your GPS location," Benatti said.

If you struggle with directions, try using Verizon's VZ Navigation app. It gives turn-by-turn audible navigation to any destination in the United States.

Once you arrive at your destination, you probably want to make sure you get to see and do as much as possible.

That's where Triposo comes in.

"You can download a guide, and it will give you all kinds of things, from where to go from a nightlife perspective, where to eat, any type of historical monument," Benatti said.

Benatti said there's plenty of apps out there that will not only save you time on trips, but also save money. The majority of them are free of charge.
