Ferris wheel workers: Quickly installed, but safe

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Atlanta's giant Ferris wheel is coming together in a hurry, but workers said they're not sacrificing safety for speed.

The goal is to have Skyview up and running within the next few days, and that includes making sure it's safe. That puts a lot of pressure on the workers, but SkyView General Manager Michael Montgomery said it's nothing his guys can't handle.

"The thing I taught these guys is look at it and touch it, so you have two senses checking equipment, so that way they'll never miss anything," said Montgomery.

To give you an idea how big the Ferris wheel is, some of the pins that hold it together are two feet long and weigh more than 400 pounds.

"Believe me they're not going anywhere. Once we put them in place and pin them, they're there until we decide they're coming out," said Montgomery.

He says that's true even if something were to go terribly wrong.

"It would take more force than this thing could ever exert for one of those pins to fail," said Montgomery.

CBS Atlanta News checked into Skyview's track record at its last home in Florida, and found zero incidents. Montgomery said he plans to keep it that way.

"I want to maintain that same standard because that's what's important to everyone that works for me, and the people going to come here and enjoy this," said Montgomery.

People in the area, checking out the Ferris wheel construction, said they trust its going to be safe.

"I'm not afraid of it whatsoever," said Nedra Deadwyler.

The state also has to inspect it before it opens. It will be sending a crew once it's totally done for a thorough inspection.

Even though Skyview is hoping construction will be done by the weekend, the state spokesman said inspectors won't be able to check it until Monday, at the very earliest.
