SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department Violent Crimes detectives are sorting out suspects and victims in a two-event incident that took place in downtown Savannah Wednesday and left a homeless man in critical condition.

SCMPD Downtown Precinct officers responded to a reported traffic accident in the 500 block of West Oglethorpe Avenue around 1:12 p.m. to find Zebedee Legree, 60, unconscious on the sidewalk. According to police, Legree had been struck by a green Lexus SUV driven by Rhett Manning, 31, of the 1600 block of Chevy Chase Road.

Witnesses told authorities that Legree and another male were running west in the eastbound lanes of Oglethorpe with the Lexus behind them being driver against the direction of traffic when the car ran over Legree. Witnesses say the other man ran from the scene.

Manning told authorities that he was flagged down by the two men who asked for money a few blocks away. When Manning tried to give them money, one of the men grabbed his cash and the two men ran away. Manning then pursued them.

Legree was transported to Memorial with critical injuries.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 912.234.2020, the confidential tip line at 912.525.3124 or text CRIMES (274637).
