GBI Crime lab cuts backlog by 55 percent

Posted: Updated:

DECATUR, GA (WTOC) - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced this week that it has reduced its incomplete reports after 30 days by more than half.

The agency attributes the more than 55 percent reduction in its backlog to state funding, adding more lab personnel and retention of several scientists who were hired and trained under federal grant funding.

In eight months, the crime lab reduced reports that were incomplete after 30 days by more than 55 percent. By the end of June, 3,041 reports were older than 30 days, that's down 128 percent from 6,931 reports at the end of October, according to a GBI news release.

Authorities and criminal justice agencies around the state are seeing faster turnaround times on reports as a result of the reduced backlog, according to the GBI.
