Happy National Pecan Pie Day

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Friday is National Pecan Pie Day.

Pecans are the only native American tree nut and the first known pecan tree plantings are believed to have been in the late 1600s in northern Mexico, according to the Georgia Pecan Growers Association.

Georgia leads the nation in pecan production and has been since the late 1800s, and there's an estimated 78 pecans used in each pecan pie, according to the Georgia Pecan Commission.

There are more than 500 varieties of pecans.
