SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Children at the West Broad Street YMCA received a recycled and repurposed gift from Savannah Technical College Historic Preservation students this week.

The students donated five kid-sized picnic tables and one end table that were created out of repurposed wood as a class project. The picnic tables will be used for arts and crafts activities, storytelling and snack times.

The Historic Preservation students chose the YMCA location as a recipient because of their emphasis on using education to help preserve and sustain their community. To keep with the theme of honoring the past, the tables were placed under a 180-year-old oak tree on the YMCA property.

"The preservation students are very pleased to donate these picnic tables to West Broad Street YMCA … and we know they will be put to good use," said Savannah Tech's Historic Preservation Department Head Stephen Hartley in the release.

Preservation students recycled wood from two pallets to construct each picnic table.
