Lois Smith thoroughly enjoys being a senior citizen.

"If I had known I was going to have this much fun,'' the Savannah resident says, "I would have become one sooner.''

It's hard to tell which Smith has more of, fun or time committed to having it in a variety of activities that keep her moving and keep her busy.

"I like to stay busy,'' said Smith. "I like to set a good example for all the seniors. If Ii can do it, they can do it.''

But few could do all Smith does.

In twice-weekly exercise classes at the Southside YMCA, she finds physical benefits.

"It keeps you young,'' she says. "It makes you feel good and you don't get as tired.''

But multiple line-dancing classes each week deliver even more.

"You have to memorize the dances and it keeps your mind going,'' says Smith. "So that is good for seniors also.''

The former Miss Senior Savannah still participates in fashion shows and ballroom dancing showcases and entertains at senior centers, sometimes dancing and sometimes telling stories with the use of puppets.

"My friends,'' she says, "have a hard time keeping up with me.''

Just to prove everyone else would too, Smith has taken up road racing and usually wins her age group, whatever that might be.

"If people ask my age,'' she says, "I say I'm in my 80s going on 40.''

In addition to volunteering in the flower room at St. Joseph's/Candler hospital, Smith is an award-winning public speaker and a deacon at White Bluff Presbyterian Church. And she has a reason for keeping such a full schedule.

"You have to stay busy to stay young,'' she says. "I think it keeps you young. It keeps you out of the rocking chair.''

That's is the last place you'll find this senior.
