The first Cory Joseph Wilson Memorial Baseball Tournament will be held next month.
Wilson died as a result of a fatal heart arrhythmia on Jan. 17, 2013. The fund-raiser will be held to buy Automated External Defibrillators and scholarships.
"Studies show that there is a 70 percent increased chance of survival when you have one of these devices at a field. So we feel that any place we can make a contribution and put one of these and make it available we would really love it," said Mike Miller, tournament director.
Tournament groups willl include the High School Division for players 15-18, rising Sophomores- rising Seniors, High School+ Division for recent high School graduates and college aged players, 14U Open 60/90 division for players who have not turned 15 before May 1, 2013, 12U Open Roster for players who have not turned 13 before May 1, 2013 and 10U Open Roster for player who have not turned 11 before May 1, 2013. The format: Two pool play games followed by single elimination with three games guaranteed.
The High School Division and the High School+ Division will be Round Robin format with a Championship Game. The cost is $30 per player with all games at L. Scott Stell Park.
The 14U Open 60/90 division will follow the format of two Pool Play Games followed by single elimination. The cost for 14U is $350 per team. The games will take place at L. Scott Stell Park.
The ormat for the 12U and 10U will be two Pool Play Games followed by single elimination. The cost is $295 per team.
The tourney will be held Aug. 2 and 3. Players receive a free Fireball 40 T-shirt.
The first share of the proceeds will go to buy an Automated External Defibrillator for Chatham County to use within county baseball facilities. Remaining proceeds will be split to buy additional AEDs for facilities in need and donated to the Cory Joseph Wilson Memorial Scholarship Fund.
