Lumpkin murder trial delayed by other cases

Attorneys spent two days submitting and arguing for or against parts of Kenneth Lumpkin's upcoming murder trial. That included which witnesses, or parts of testimony, what evidence, and other procedures would be allowed or suppressed.

Lumpkin faces murder charges in the 2010 killing of Lori Arrowood. The two were neighbors in the Gum Branch area of Long and Liberty counties. Lumpkin was a jailer for the Liberty County Sheriff's Office at the time and Arrowood was a military spouse whose husband was deployed to Iraq. Arrowood disappeared from the couple's home and her body was found shortly after investigators arrested and interviewed Lumpkin.

In December 2011, prosecutors announced they would seek the death penalty against Lumpkin. That declaration adds many more steps and motions and hearings to the judicial process, including assigning Lumpkin an attorney certified by the state of Georgia to try death penalty cases.

One of the issues left unresolved by the motions hearing was when Lumpkin would face trial. Atlantic Circuit District Attorney Tom Durden had previously told WTOC they hoped to try Lumpkin by the end of this year.

But Judge Paul Rose learned in court Lumpkin's attorney has nine other clients facing death penalty trials. Many of those cases began before this one and they will be tried in order if they are ready to go to trial.

Loved ones of Lori Arrowood find the delays frustrating.

"Now we're looking at waiting until the first of the year," said her sister Kris Elliott. "It makes it harder because you just want to put it behind you and heal."

Lumpkin remains in jail while he awaits trial.
