ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Four firefighters were injured after rescuing a man from a burning home late Tuesday night.

The home on Northwest Drive was in flames when the first engine company arrived, firefighters said. Neighbors told them there was a strong possibility that someone was trapped inside.

Firefighters tried to enter the home, but the flames initially pushed them back. As more crews arrived, however, firefighters were able to make entry.

"One of our crews was able to locate the victim," said Assistant Chief Chris Wessels of Atlanta Fire & Rescue. "They rescued the victim out of the house."

The man, whom family members identified as Marvin Johnson, 57, was in cardiac arrest when firefighters pulled him out of the home, said Janet Ward, a spokeswoman for Atlanta Fire & Rescue. He remains at Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition, Ward said.

Three of the injured firefighters were treated at the scene. A fourth was transported to Grady and has since been released. At his request, the fire department is not releasing his name.

"He sustained burn injuries to his hands," said Wessels.

Family members of the homeowner told CBS Atlanta News that he is on a ventilator because of the large amount of smoke he inhaled.

Firefighters are investigating what caused the fire. Check back with CBSAtlanta.com for updates.
