HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley stopped by Hilton Head Island's Sea Pines resort on Wednesday to make an important announcement about dredging in Sea Pine's waterways.

After a three-year process, the Sea Pines Resort has finally been granted the proper permits it needs to deepen its three waterways.

Haley made the announcement Wednesday afternoon to an audience full of supporters. Sea Pines and the governor say the project will bring millions of dollars to Hilton Head.

The resort has an average of 2.5 million visitors each year; most of whom travel by boat.

The governor said that if they don't deepen the water, big boats won't be able to dock there, which will result in a loss of visitors and revenue.

"This was a South Carolina effort not just Sea Pines, and I'm very proud of that," Haley said. "This is very beneficial to our state."

The cost if this project has yet not been determined. Sea Pines is paying for half of the project and the other half is coming from the dock owners.

The dredging is expected to start by November.
