TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -

The Chatham County Health Department has placed Polk Street Beach at the mouth of the Savannah River from the end of the beach to the jetty, under advisory.

The advisory is only for the Polk Street Beach area and does not impact other beaches on Tybee Island. The beach water advisory is to alert the public of a possible illness associated with water contact. It does not mean the beach is closed.

Routine water quality tests taken on July 16 showed a high level of enterococci bacteria, which increases the risk of gastrointestinal illness in swimmers.

The Chatham County Health Department recommends the public do not swim or wade in the water in the area under advisory. Fish and other seafood caught in the area should be thoroughly washed and cooked before eating.

Officials will retest the area on July 18. The advisory will be lifted when tests show the bacteria levels meet the Environmental Protection Agency's recommended standards.
